INDIVIDUAL MATA ORTIZ POTTERY

Lydia Quezada Museum Quality White Clay Mata Ortiz Olla

Lydia Quezada is Jaun Quezada's sister and one of the top five potters in Mata Ortiz. The elegance of her pottery, either black on block or polychrome, like the present piece, is legendary. The olla is quite large measuring a full 13 inches high by 8.5 inches in diameter.

Lydia is well known from her black on black pottery that is made with highly polished designs on a matte black background. Quite a bit more rare and much more coveted is her white-clay pottery. The decoration is a signature design for this distinguished potter. It is the mirror image of the black on black designs, but here executed on a white background.

Lydia and her equally talented husband, Rito Talavera, are featured prominently in the authoritative book The Many faces of Mata Ortiz. It devotes four full pages to these master potters, beginning on page 155.
